Says: Goddamn, someone with taste!! What a rarity. One day, when all is well with the world, the likes of the Dicks, Big Boys and The Pop Group will get their due. Multi-platinum sales, private jets, the whole deal. And then the Fall, Cecil Taylor and th e Stooges will become millionaires. Yeah, right... Til then, chin up and fight that Man, whiteboy!

Says: Nice one. It's good to see there are still people about who appreciate good music. I just bought the cd 'We are all Prostitutes' (now I can lock up the original vinyls somewhere safe) and agree they could have put twice as much on - what about 'Rob a Bank'etc. It's more like 'Rob the Punter'! Anyway keep up the good work - if you're interested a lot of Mark Strewart's later stuff (the mind blowing 'Jerusalem' for one) are available on various On-U-Sound CDs and vinyl. They even have their own website. Take care Dave ps If I'm right in assuming you're from the States you might like some help locating vinyl etc available in the UK. If so just e-mail me at the above address.

Says: I don't know if this is true or not but there was supposedly a promo 12" of "Shes Beyond Good and Evil/3.38" that had a bonus track on it. Someone told me that at a record show in NYC but they could have been full of shit. Anyways, I enjoyed looking at your page. The pop Group is definitely one of my favorite groups of all time. It's surprising they are not spoken of as often as the Birthday Party.

Says: Great to finally see something more about The Pop Group - one of the most elusive and brilliant bands of their time. The articles and pictures are the only I've seen since I'd first heard them ( Wanna Buy A Bridge? way back in 1981). Surely there are more of us out there who have all of the few releases and would like to find more. Live tapes floating out there somewhere? Hopefully you'll later expand to include Stewart + Maffia, Rip Rig etc. OK nice job

As you might know, they were a big influence on Melbourne, Australian bands especially Nick Cave and the Birthday Party. I work in a record shop and have a noise and other stuff CD label called Dr Jims. Our recent releases have include avant garde bagpipe, Jad Fair, punk, and free jazz.

Says: Great page, if any band needs a cool, informative site like this it's the pop group. A friend of mine said that they make gang of 4(who rule with extreme prejudice) sound like duran duran. Anyway, I read the nick Cave Bio "Bad Seed" where Nick talks about how B.Party loved the Pop Group and the Fall. He also mentions how disapointed he was when the b.p. came to England and mostly encountered bands like Echo & the Bunnymen, etc. Also in REsearch: Search & Destroy vol.2 David Thomas(Pere Ubu) talks about seeing the pop group and playing with them!! He makes a Captain Beefheart comparison which I think is pretty right on. Thanks for letting me gush on your page. thanx Danny

Says: Great site! To answer the person's question about the "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" 12" - I have a copy of that 12" - the sleeve is exactly the same as the 7" version and contains the same two tracks - no additional tracks at least on my copy - sounds fucking great too. Anyways, I'm looking for Japanese pressings of the RT 7"s along with the Japanese RT CD's that were briefly available - lemme know if anyone wants to part with their copies (ha ha) - Ph# 317-356-0685 Fax 317-356-8416 Thanks Jade

Says: To you only, okay? I'm Tom from the band To Live and Shave in L.A., and The Pop Group had (and remain) a vast influence on me and my work. I was around when they were around, and "Good and Evil"/"3:38" and _Y_ blew my fucking mind. Bovell's production was the key for me - as much as I love the demo stuff on _We Are Time_ (and natch the live recordings too), his collab with TPG created a fractous sonic chasm that's only now being mapped. Certainly my group, and our immediate peers (chief among them The Flying Luttenbachers) owe a helluva debt to them... I was one of the lucky ones: I saw 'em in June, 1980 at the Mudd Club in NYC. They performed material off the then just-released _How Much Longer_ alb, the (still-searing) "Prostitutes" single, and "Thief of Fire." Man O Man! So good... Anyhow, I've got a pretty decent press archive on 'em, the NME cover ish, etc., so if you need anything lemme know. Maybe I could trade some jpgs from my archive for any audio rarities I don't (sob!) have... Sincerely, Tom Smith

Says: I saw the Pop Group twice, and both atypical performances too. Once was in front of the biggest crowd they ever played in front of, at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament rally in Trafalgar Square, London, in about 1981. They played "Jerusalam" and people near me thought it was horrible. The second time I was living in Sheffield and hitched to Leicester with a friend to catch the Pop Group. After watching mark Stewart throw a tantrum before the show because there wasn't any vegetarian food the band played a short but funky set with, i seem to remember, two drum kits. It all came to an end suddenly when Gareth Sager (wearing an insulting tee shirt with female breasts) exploded with an epistaxis (ok, a nosebleed). I loved 'Y', loved the guitar effects and the dub production. I saw Pigbag, mark Stewart & the mafia, Rip Rig and panic and maximum Joy, but nothing came close to the Pop Group. It was a good time for music with Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, the Slits and the Fall playing what seemed like everywhere, everyweek. Somehow music doesn't move me like it did them. The Pop Group were the second best thing out of Bristol (Bristol Rovers circa 1972 being the best). Geraint

Says: Way way back in my college days I got hooked on the dub-punk scene. There are more fans here in the states than most think. The staples of my listening day included The Slits, Raincoats, Nina Hagen, Fisher Z, New Age Steppers, and a pretty decent lineup of local Western NY talent (Bahamamama, Electro Man/Paper Faces, Billy Piranha & The Enemies, and Joe Regular). The best was by far The Pop Group. Before I left school all my records were stolen, but a kind friend made me a tape of How Much Longer. That tape just about gave out when I found the We Are All Prostitutes CD. Great web site for a truly under appreciated band. As for current groups, I get the same kind of vibe from Soul Coughing. I also hear a 90's version of The Slits in Luscious Jackson. Cheers!

Says: Great site - it's a bugger to search for anything about the Pop Group because if you search under that name, you get 3 million Boyzone sites. I found this by searching for "Gareth Sager". My Pop Group memory, such as it is, is jumping up on stage with the band at the Kim Philby Club in Manchester and yelling along with "Rob a Bank" ("for Cambodia" as it was then called). This was in 1980 or 81. I shared a microphone with Mark Stewart for this brief and blessed moment. I saw them four or five times in all, Rip, Rig & Panic about the same number and Maximum Joy and the Glaxo Babies once each. Happy days. A friend in the music business tells me Mark's now gone a bit paranoid, and rants about international conspiracies all the time (rather than most of it, as before). I hope this doesn't get to be a real problem, and wish the ex-members of the band, all the fans and you all the best for the future. Paul

Says: The Pop Group are the most influential and unrecogonized band I can think of. My intro to them was the "We Are All Prostitues 7". I bought it for 3 bucks at the local record store(Co-OP) in 1984. I've converted folks to Gang of 4 and Wire, but no-one's ever gotten the Pop Group. No reissues endorsed by Rock stars for the Pop Group. They're still as fierce as when I first heard them in 1984. It looks like time has finally caught up.

Says: Fabulous site. A lot of hard work definitely went into this page. I hope that someone out there will be kind enough to contact me if they could please tape me the "How Much Longer...." & "We are Time" LP's. I only have "Y" & "We are all Prostitutes," and would love to hear the other tracks not included on "WAAP." Live or demo recordings would also be greatly appreciated. By the way, I believe the sound of the Pop Group continues on to this day, as represented by such bands as Clikitat Ikatowi, and other assorted Gravity Records bands. Finally, could anyone recommend the definitive post-Pop Group albums that should be picked up? There were plenty of resultant groups from the break-up (Pigbag, Rip Rig & Panic, Mark Stewart & the Maffia, etc.); however, very little detailed info (ie: reviews of)about these albums exists on the web. any prudent info would definitely assist my buying habits. i hope to hear other fans soon....

Says: Dixon, again, you've done a fine job with this Pop Group site... I can't believe that yours is the only comprehensive PG site on the net! (or at least the only one I can find.) Such a pity that The Pop Group are considered by many as merely a footnote in the history of UK punk/new wave. To some, they're much more! If the Birthday Party and the Minutemen are so widely hailed as they are (and they both thoroughly deserve it) - two bands heavily influenced by The Pop Group - then surely their inspiration deserves some recognition... I'm rambling. I must've listened to "Y" a thousand times - a desert-isle disc, for sure - but for now I have to be satisfied with seeing The Pop Group's 1978 touring partners, Pere Ubu, playing here down here in January 1999. What a crazy world.
