Says: The Pop Group
Saw The Pop Group many times in the late 70's, Manchester Poly, St. Paul's London are two memorable gigs. Great energy, great sense of abandon in performance and a truly eclectic inspiration evident in their work.
They have influenced me ever since, they truly carried the spirit of Punk, not the safety pins etc but the sense of rebellion, true soulfulness and individuality. They also obviously listened to a lot of the same stuff as me, respect for their good taste.
SNOWGIRL is still one of my favourite love songs
Thanks for the memories and especially the ongoing influences

Says: Thanks SO much for all your work on this band!! I was sad that no one knew of them...
Anyway, "We Are All Prostitutes" from "I Like It" comp. on Compost is the straight track, no remix. The track was selected as a favorite by DJ Hell, who commented on all the tracks he picked should speak for themselves.
I also have an NME article w/ a response article featuring The Slits And The Pop Group on the review they got form the magazine on their split single. I didn't see it on your site, but then again I probably didn't look hard enough. Let me know if I can help.
Thanks again!!

Here is a rare one for you: The 1979 album by the Good Missionaries "Fire from Heaven" (off shoot of the punk band Alternative TV) features a live cover version of Thief of Fire (featuring "Mark and Simon pop grouping"). Good Missionaries toured with the Pop Group in summer 1979. I remember seeing them at the Ashton Gate free Festival in Bristol - very good. If you can tell me how to get from a vinly lp to an mp3, will happily upload for you!!!
ps - I think you under rate Maximum Joy on yuor site - they were excellent too.

Says: Got into the Pop Group first time round in '79, had the 'Y' poster on my wall! Its a bit grim isn't it? Still play 'She Is Beyond Good & Evil' at discos. Must be played loud through massive sound system. Experimental and challenging, they don't make music like this anymore do they? Got asked for 'We Are All Prostitutes' whilst playing at a pub in Brighton. A highlight of my djing career. I was in a band in '79/'80 playing Pop group/ Pere Ubu/ Swell Maps/ Joy Division/ Beefheart/ Chrome influenced stuff. Check out The Homosexuals/ L.Voag for more dubbed out post punk sorties. I also have a radio show here in Brighton UK, still keeping the flame. Good site cheers

Says: Hello, this is Kim Davis, author of the NME review of the Pop Group supporting Elvis Costello about a quarter of a century ago. I am a better writer now. But that was quite a set they played. The most dramatic moment was Gareth Sager collapsing on stage like a sack of potatoes, then getting up and starting to play guitar again as if nothing had happened. I thought it was part of the show, but when I caught up with them a week or so later, backstage at the Roundhouse, he told me he'd passed out briefly - exhausted.
Thanks for the memories.

Everything is just so superficially commercial and the youth don't seem to have anything inside of them. I just feel like screaming WAKE UP PEOPLE. THE WORLD HAS SUCKED U IN, ENSLAVED UR MIND FOR WHAT? A £, A $. WHAT DOES THAT GIVE U? JUST MORE PAIN. FREEDOM IS NOT A CHOICE. FREEDOM IS A NECESSITY.

I did get a few off Ka zaa lite but want them on cd as my vinyl is worn out and crackles, jumps about. I tried Napster and other "official" mp3 stores but they don't have the albums online either. It's shit, these songs need to be heard and this music needs to be broadcast.

Says: I'm a relatively recent fan of the Pop Group, digging out an old and dusty copy of "Y" from my Dad's record collection about a year-and-a-half ago. Some of the songs sounded familiar; no doubt I heard them subliminally in the womb! I'm getting more into Rip Rig & Panic now: their music has a real sense of wild abandon that most modern bands don't even seem interested in evoking. "God" is a terrific record! I hear that Mark Springer's still going, releasing on a jazz label called Exit. Anyone else know what his new stuff's like?

Each and every one of us

our part of sacrifice

We're getting ever closer
to the new being

whose ego is about to appear
That's right
That's right
Where there's a will
There has got to be a way
Reap for tomorrow [reap, weep ?]
Don't let them eat you today
Don't let them eat you today
No one is defeated
until they're prepared to admit defeat
We are not defeated
Don't ever appear to admit defeat
Join the undefeated
Join the undefeated
We're going to try
Let's try!
The way out is through the door... how come nobody uses it?
The way out is through the door

How come nobody uses it?
How come nobody uses uses uses it?
In the empire
Resistance will grow stronger

Let the end define the means
Let the end define the means
Let's try

Going to fight the tanks (at least that's what I think he says)
Each and every one of us

Dixon died on Sunday 31st July. Jenni thought I should pass on the information to all those Dixon met virtually and in real life through this site.
It seems likely that Dixon was electrocuted in a swimming pool accident.
I was fortunate enough to meet Dixon a few times on his trips to the UK. He was a great man and we shared a common interest in music of and related to The Pop Group. I considered him a close friend.
I've watched this site develop and seen the enjoyment people have gained from it. We will all greatly miss Dixon and his passion for music.
My thoughts go out to Jenni and Dixon's family.
