Says: Nice to see a site that does the band justice.I remember seeing The Pop Group a couple of times, once at a CND rally (Trafalgar Square,I think)and also at aa open air gig (it may have been at Brockwell Park with the Slits,Au Pairs,John Cooper Clarke)Anyway, still the best live band I've seen to date.
I've got the original LP's on vinyl but they are very over played. Now I am on the net I've noticed alot of sites offering Pop Group recordings.Where is the best site /shop to buy cd versions of the albums and mint copies of the singles?
Also, what is a fair price? Finally, where can I get mint vinyl albums with all appropriate inserts?

I know it's asking alot but can anybody help.

Thanks,
Tim Reynolds

Says: After reading a bit about the Pop Group here and there about 7 years ago, I became obsessed! But finding anything in Maine was a difficult task. Finally a record collecting lawyer friend of mine made me a copy of "We Are Time". It was crazier than I had ever hoped for. Soon after, the record "Y" was rereleased and then "We're All Prostitutes", and I discoved Rip Rig + Panic & Pigbag and WOW! that's some of my favorite music ever But My Interest Went Deeper! How I missed this website over the past three years of my being about the internet is beyond me, but thanks for the great and informative bank you've compiled about our favorite "Young Rimbauds' dedicated to creating Hell on Stage"!

How can I forget Sazophonists riding shoulders while kilted Gareth Sager stacatta guitar thrashing running rings around the giant Mark Stewart spitting words as bruce Smith drummed brand new body rythmns, while old military coated followers piped penny whistles from the crowd, bizzare and astonishing. I'll nevr forget. Thankyou PG

GOT TO FIND THIS NOW!! I have lots of additions for your site but don't have the time to list right now. But here's one Maximum Joy - Why Can't We Live Together 7" Garage Records GAR1 Title plus Man Of Tribes on the flip. Features Waddington on guitar, Kev'N'Charlie, bass 'N'drums, Paul'Nelly'Hooper on Syndrums, Jeremy Hirsch keyboards and trumpet, Janine-Petta, Nelly and Dennis Bovell on vocals. Produced by Bovell at Studio 80. A tough one to find these days. More soon... Thanks again Ed

Says: I am very happy that you created this site. They are a magnificent band. I got into their music a lot this year (although I first listened to them 4 years ago when "She is Beyond Good and Evil" was re-issued). I was introduced to them via 89.3FM WNUR. It's our college station at Northwestern University. Check us out on the dial if you're ever in the Evanston, IL or Chicago area. We are the music revolution. :) I'm currently tying the Pop Group's song lyrics into a personal art project I'm working on regarding a young punk girl growing up in factory town america. Thanks for the info on your site. They are a mysterious lot!

Says: Man, what a band! When i first heard them in early 1980 on a Radio Show ( John Peel Show, called Rock Today, before it was renamed and got 1hour more airplay), i was totally fascinated by the song SHE IS BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL! I'm happy that i've still got the Single and didn't make the failure to sell it, what i did with a lot records in the 90's. I also did purchase the HOW MUCH LONGER... LP with the 4 Posters, but sadly i didn't have them anymore. With their mixture of Punk, Funk, R'n B' and their political statements they were a unique Band. Not often easy to listen to, but i like them anyways. Good Hommage-Site to the Pop Group, the one and only! Keep on going!

Says: Hi the site is superb. well done! I have a few things you may wish to include in the site but I am not very IT literate so I cannot scan or anything. The e-mail is my wifes. I have 2 large posters one promoting the release of the first albumn and one for an amnesty gig, somewhere I have a small 'we are all prostitutes' button but the best thing is that I have on loan an lp acetate of the 1978 demos which include those released on 'we are time'. The guy who gave me it bought it from one of the band. He thinks it is the only one around and was used by the band to promote themselves to the record co. Anyhow I have given it to a mate to record onto cd, I have not heard it yet as an acetate degrades with each play. I will send photos of the labels and posters if they will be of use. mail me your postal address. cheers Martin

Says: I just recently got Y after hearing years of fevered testimonials about this alubum. Its this Miles Davis, Yoko Ono, James Brown, Ornette Coleman, Can, Beefheart, Contortions had a dance party kind of monstrosity with paranoid and psychotic lyric ranted screamed and whispered over...in fact it sums up everything I love about music. I can't believe my ears it really sounds like nothing else..the references are there but the results are competely alien. I can't stop playing it over and over. It was recorded in 1979 but it seems relevenant and squirmingly and obscenely alive today both musically(check out Erase Errata, Exmodels, Wolf Eyes, and Glass Candy and the Shattered theater if you doubt me)and politically(it gets scarier here in America everyday). Write me anyone with info on how to get more by them or even just tapes(I'll compensate anyone who does this either with money or taping something for them) or maybe want to start a fan group or something if you live in the Chicago area..Okay. Props to Weasel Walter and the Flying Luttenbachers for putting a link to this site on their fabulous website. Love, Adam

Says: Too young to remember The Pop Group as a live concern, shame, just fell in line with Pig Bag's success, eleven at the time. Recently rediscovered all this music after obtaining a copy of 'She Is Beyond Good And Evil'. Unbelievable, never has a pop song, sounded so on the verge of madness, I love it with a passion along with the album 'We Are Time' and the recent compilation. In 'Genius Or Lunatic' are they writing about themselves in addition to some of their own heroes? So many great artistes only get recognition after they die, or in this case, after The Pop Group split. By the way does anybody remember or a have a copy of Paul Morley's review in the NME for 'For How Long We...?' What was he on about? Then does anybody know what he's (ever) on about? Fantastic site and more information than I expected.

USed to know John quite well, I was a good friend of a girlfriend of his when lived in London (Hi Mike and Jamie). Always wondered what happened to him. He was in a band called Spank for a short while (there was a bald singer from Newcastle) and then I saw him play at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill in a project called... don't remember but I think the woman was called Anna. All a long time ago now. Great site anyway. Sorry for rambling. Will come back with more coherent thoughts another time

Says: Damn shame I never got to see them. I was just about old enough, but they never played anywhere near me. (I lived in the sleepy backwater of Lincoln at the time), then they split up. If Bauhaus can get back together then i'm sure the pop group would do twice as well, cos they never became the "lame, tame has beens" that bauhaus turned into. Here I am twenty years on and they still sound fresh to my ears. Now that's what I call music!

Anyway, thanks in advance, great site, and I swear I'm probably the only person in the world below age 18 who listens to them...damned shame...

Says: I'm from Bristol and saw The Pop Group several times - Trinity Church and A Communist Party benefit at Alexandria Palace spring to mind. They reflected what was happening at Bristol at that time. At the Dugout, the inspirational club where the Wild Bunch later formed, the DJ's played a mixture of funk, punk and reggae - the crowd was a mix of students, rastas, punks and rockabilly's...Bristol was a funk and reggae town and the bands that came out of Bristol often (not always) reflected this...The Pop Group were the first. Others such as Color Tapes (find their incredible single Cold Anger - produced by the Pop Group), Maximum Joy, Glaxo Babies followed. They were very much a Clifton band though, formed by kids from the Grammar school. On the other side of town the sound wasn't appreciated. Live they were incredible - they relied a lot on Bruce's drumming and Dan (from the Glaxo's) bass playing. At trinity they had 2 drummers and 2 bassists...an incredible noise, just as they would have wanted it. I remember the incredible music played before they came on stage - One Nation under a Groove, U Brown's - Heavy than Lead...great to hear that stuff on a loud sound system and a revelation after hearing all those dull punk bands.
