Says: i want to thank you for this site about the Pop Group. i'm so happy to have
come across it. yes, truly.
i've first met the Pop Group in 1979, when i've bought the Amnesty Report/ Prostitutes
single (i was 17 at the time). it was a big shock. then i've bought everything
i could find from them (i've got all the vinyls, except Y, and all the CDs, except
'we are all prostitutes', which i don't manage to find here).
since that time, TPG has remained a big influence on me. i love their records.
i'm part of a band called STPO (la societe des timides a la parade des oiseaux /
shy society at the bird parade) and we've recorded several tracks on our albums
which are a kind of hommage to the Pop Group.
Thanks again
Pascal
[Editor's note: check out some mp3s of STPO on Beta-Lactam records website

Says: Dan Catsis is sitting next to me right now (Cor!) and is - of course - wearing black. We are discussing plans for world domination, and whether to go out for some more baccy. We have a band called The Blossom Freaks (Cor! again) and are writing stuff for an album which we hope to begin recording in the summer. We are presently playing stuff from my Blossom Freak album which is out on Sugar Shack records in February. Dan says 'Hi', which may seem banal, but he is, as we know, a man of few words, but many deeds.

Says: Excellent band. Up there with the Fall,Joy Division,Magazine,Gang of Four and Swell Maps as the most influential of British bands of the late 70's/early 80's. Still think Colour Blind is my favourite track & dissappointed by its abscence on the 'best of' compilation 'We are all Prostitutes". Has anyone seen it on any CD formats? Please let me know.

Says: Yep, its an amazing site (sic) and even better than the last time I visted. Great to discover the Mona Mona and I didn't even know veneer came out as an ep or about the remix wars which I guess is pathetic for a 'fan'. I'll be on the lookout though. I've got a spare copy of the maximum joy lp I wasn't sure if you needed it following your visit to the uk. I've also got the jerusalem 12" which I didn't see a pic of though I would't know how to scan it as I'm thick but I could send a photocopy. Also I guess I'll have to work out MP3, theres an NME cover and article from 1978 I'm due to get next week if you would like it posting anyhow, I'll drop in again Cheers Martin

Says: Well done! Just seen the pages and will have to come back for a longer look (am at work right now). The Pop Group were one of the most exciting/thrilling bands I've ever seen, I can still vividly remember walking into a packed Electric Ballroom in Camden Town and hearing Mark screaming out 'Rob a bank, rob a bank' at the top of his voice. The Pop Group were one of the most dynamic punk bands opening myself and others up to jazz and funk on the one hand and adding to my already strong Crass-inspired Anarchism on the other. Ah, those were the days...
Will come back for more,
Cheers!

Good site thanks for starting something on the band - if you like Pop Group you'll probably also like very early Scritti Pollitti - 'Skank Bloc Bologna' rare but worth trying to find.

Says: nice website - yes, i couldn't find anything on the pop group on the web, this is certainly the first find i've had. i'm at work at the moment but i will come again. oh yes, no surprize i'm a huge fan. My ex-girlfriend met bruce smith about 5 years ago at a recording studio and she took in a couple of records for me for him to sign - he was well excited when she presented 'we are all prostitutes' single. He made them put it on the record player and listen to it. he said he was 17 when he made that record, and since he was burgled he didn@t even have a couple for himself. nice little story. all the best, regards David.

Says: Hi Dixon, just like to say that i spent some time last night reading your site.
i've really enjoyed it, it's great to see that the pop group really are treated with respect in certain quarters. Unfortunately i never saw them but i bought we are all prostitutes after hearing it on john peel. i can't honestly say that i liked it when i first heard it, it just made me sit up and listen...completely confused (one of the other moments i remember feeling that way was when i first heard death disco by pil) I bought it out of sheer puzzlement and just grew to love it to death. when the y album came out i was still not a big record buyer and i was unsure whether to get it (still being a naive 15/16 year old)then a mate of mine told me his brother had bought it and his girlfriend hated it so much she threw it in the dustbin! I HAD TO HEAR THAT ALBUM!...so i bought it and fell in love. i still play all their records now and apart from 23 Skidoo and some Throbbing Gristle there is nobody i love more and still play their music today as The Pop Group. Utterley timeless music. Interestingly i only heard Coltrane about 3 years ago (i bought an album called 'Stellar Regions' and it really reminded me of Gareth Sager's playingon the pop group records, it suddenly made sense in the 'jazz perspective' of the bands music which i had heard talked about so much, i'd really recommend this album by the way...it just makes me laugh in the sense of its freedom. i think that's what i'm trying to say about hearing The Pop Group all those years ago and subsequently still listening and re-buying their music on cd just for convenience of playing...the liberties they seemed to take with music at the time was a liberation for me, and has thankfully never left.
all the best to you
regards
David

Says: Many, many thanks for all the info - it wasn't easy being a rebellious, angry teenager in 'Royal' Tunbridge Wells in the late seventies and my trips to Rough Trade records and Portobello Road market will forever be fond memories for me. I discovered The Pop Group when I went to Rough Trade to get some Slits and Raincoats stuff and remember being completely knocked out by 'WhereThere's A Will' blasting out of the p.a.
I'm glad to say I still have all my original Popgroup (though not the posters - damn), Slits, and Raincoats vinyl. I don't think I have any extra or rare info to add I'm afraid though I will suggest giving early 'Defunkt' a listening if anyone out there likes funk with a punk hard edge.

Says: It's heartwarming to discover this site dedicated to one of my favorite bands. The Pop Group were the best of the England's new wave of intense young artists. Their music always makes me smile.
My most special Pop Group memory is of a two week period when I decided to take acid every day. The Pop Group (esp. the Mass Murder LP) was the soundtrack for much intense behavior. I emerged from this two week period convinced that if I had to go down, I would go down fighting. The Pop Group is the beautiful sound of struggle. It leaves the listener primed and astute, and stronger.
I wish I could get some Pop Group CDs. My original records burned in a fire a couple years back. I need the singles, Y, We Are Time, and Mass Murder...I don't wanna have to rob a bank, but if there's a will, there has got to be a way...

Says: I'd never heard of the Pop group until yesterday April 2001. When I sent some gig photos to the lead singer of 'The Cortinas' - Jeremy Valentine. The photos were taken backstage at a Cortinas gig at The Roxy club Feb 1978. Jeremy said thanks for the photos and youve got members of "The Pop Group" as well as the Cortinas in some photos.
I have low res scans of the photos if you would like to see them.
This all came to light because I made film about the Punk scene in 1978 and Channel 4 TV are showing clips from it later this year. Sorry no Pop group set was ever filmed.
Thanks for a great Web site.

We Are Prostitutes has been a favorite since high school. I have We Are Time and Y on cassette and For How Much Longer on LP. Now that the Kleenex/Liliput CD has come out, for me the last remaining reissue that I'm really dying for is any and all Pop Group! That Japanese stuff is just too expensive...

Says: The Pop Group were absolutely amazing. I have "Y", and have been looking fanatically for "Mass Murder". Attempted bids on ebay, but the prices go too high for me. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find "Mass Murder" on cd. Also was wondering if anyone knows where I can find anything by the late great German band Palais Schaumburg? the Swell Maps, Fall, PiL, Birthday Party, were great as well. Listen to mostly bands like Mogwai, Godspeed, Mouse on mars these days, as well as some of that early dub-reggae and free jazz stuff that was very influential on the Pop Group...

Says: I don't know how interesting this is. Possibly not very. But I saw the Pop Group live twice. Once at the Electric Balroom in Camden, London (I think), supporting the Gang of Four (I think). I never deliberately set out to see the Gang of Four (or the Raincoats, who I also, inadverdertently, saw a number of times - they might have been on this bill as well). I went to see the Pop Group. Mark Stewart was wearing a white jacket smeared with what looked like blood, and, when they came on, adopted the posture of an ape, dragging his hands near the ground. At one point the group invited one of their mates - "Richard" - to come on stage and dance, which he did with impressive abandon. I think this might have been the sleeve designer and later singer with Head, Richard Beale, but don't know for sure. I remember being confused but stimulated by their performance - it seemed much more primeval than the average post-punk performance. The second time was at the free all-day outdoor concert at Alexandra Park, North London, organized by the Socialist Workers Party, or the Communist Party - someone like that anyway. The Slits and John Cooper Clarke also performed. Gareth Sager wore a red tail-jacket, leaped about a lot and had a mohican. Before "For How Much Longer Must We Tolerate Mass Murder" Mark Stewart held up a large framed photo of Breshnev. Unfortunately the Slits were into their organic phase by this time and their earlier fantasticness, e.g. on the White Riot tour, was fading. I also saw Sager join the Slits on stage at the Rainbow, and one of Mark Stewart's early solo gigs - at the Hacienda in Manchester when it had just opened. The band opened with theme from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", with Stewart whistling the refrain (if I remember correctly). There were only a handful of people there and we went up to talk to him afterwards. I asked him if a friend of a friend had truly been a Pop Group roadie as he had claimed and Mark said he didn't recognise the name. He then bummed a fag off me (US translation: he asked me for a cigarette). He was well spoken and polite. That's enough I think - best wishes to all.

Says: I remember seeing The Pop Group at Witcombe Lodge on the Shurdington Road near Cheletenham (up the road from Bristol- 45 miles), probably around about 1978/9, can't remember exactely - but it was before just they had released "She's beyond...." and I'm fairly sure I was about 16. I think Maximum Joy supported or maybe ATV although it could have been Creation Rebel with Prince Far I Clint Eatswood and Bim Sherman - I saw too many bands and drank to much to remember exactely. The Pop Group were the most amazing and bizarre group I had ever seen. I just remember an onslaught of punk funk guitar and bass with Mark Stewarts primal screaming over the top. Towards the end of their set a small boy (10 ish) got up on stage and took over the vocals like a mini Mark Stewart - and it worked !. I remember Mark Stewart had a plaster on his face covering a huge boil on the side of his nose! "She's beyond good and evil" was the stand out track and I remember being a tad disappointed when it was n't on the album "Y". But that was n't the thing to do then - it was frowned upon if albums contained anything which had been released before - it just wasn't the post punk value for money ethic! Never saw them again - but out of their ashes came Pigbag (Duh, duh der duh, duh der deeer duh), Rip Rig and Panic, Float up CP (both with Neneh Cherry)all of whom I saw several times.
When I remember I keep trying to track down "Y" on CD but have to make do with what I've got left - the 7" inch singles "Where theres a will...." and "We are all prostitutes". I have to hear "She's beyond ...." again soon!

i enjoyed live performances of mark stewart(on-u sound tour,2 days),when he came to japan at last. he sung 'prostitutes'&'hungry' for japanese the pop group fans! he was too cool and too tall. when his next cd is issued???

Says: hum...i remember having bought the first single a few years ago (well it was in 1979 i think !) and all records the Pop Group have done after... I had to sell all my records (around 2000) and almost forgot they exist when i have found 2 singles in an old box...
So it was great to download some mp3 on the web and to hear again "colour blind" for example...
Thanx for the site that help me to remember better (and sorry for the poor english)

Says: Used to see Rip rig and panic all the time for a while in London about once a month!!
They also ran a club that went under various guises Cass's club in Leicester Square, Hot Sty, Bite Nite..
that went on for a couple of years...playing lovely dub and jazz and funk sets.
They were young fun times..Sean (oliver) was particularly friendly.
I was also at the Slits gig at Bradford Uni. someone else mentioned but Neneh got offa her arse and jammed!!
Ari from the slits and very occasional Rip Rigger (check shadows only there because of the sun) is gigging a lot in New York now and a lots is being transferred to video on punkcast.com ..they look chaotic and brilliant

Says: Made me want to form a band... named after the 'we are time' line 'this is the age of chance' Never heard anything like them before or since. Briefly met mark stewart and Simon Underwood - even they couldn't articulate what drove and made them so unique. some things are best not explained.

Says: nice site
im from bristol myself - never saw the pop group ( just missed em at ashton court free festival in 1977 - and they never played that much in bristol - have seen mark stewart at my on -u-sound gigs during the eighties. they were too far ahead of the game at the time ( and seemed to hold onto a punk/hippie ideology that few people seem to understand today ( in musical terms) - this was sure to be ther death of em - as it should be! or else you just end with shit !
cheers - gazz

Says: I was burgled a few years ago and my treasured Pop Group tunes went out the door with all my other favourite music. Since then I have managed to replace Y and How Much Longer, but We Are Time, Prostitutes and Where There's a Will are impossible to find in Australia. Is there some kind soul on the list who owns them and would be prepared to copy them onto (preferably ) a mini disc or CD. In return I will make a large contribution to a charity (the Pop Group used to play benefits for Help the Aged in the UK, so it will be an aged care charity). I remember when Y first came out there was talk in the press about how the Pop Group published their music out of copyright - does anyone know if this applied to ther later music?
Thanks
Geraint
